Where I fell is not the most convenient place to be rescued. After reviewing the terrain and the effort that it would take to hike a 195 pound man out of that location, the decision was made to fly in a helicopter. They foundg me pretty quickly thanks to the GPS transponder that is in my phone. After circling for a bunch of times. they found a place to land and hiked up 300 feet to assess my situation.
The decision that was made was to splint the leg, put a harness on me and then go back down to the helicopter so that they could hover above me and haul me up on a cable. In just a few short moments, I was clipping the cable to the harness and being hauled 70 feet into the air. They were able to get me partially into the plane and once that was accomplished they relanded. strapped me in and we flew the 13 minutes to the hospital.
Never having been in a helicopter, I really did not know what to expect, but this ride was a dream. And while would not want to ever be in this type of situation again, I think I would enjoy another helicopter ride.
